The No. 51 Cal Poly women’s tennis team continued its dominant form, securing two impressive victories in Hawai’i. The Mustangs defeated Hawai’i Pacific 6-1 on Tuesday, March 25, and followed up with a 5-2 win over No. 70 Hawai’i on Wednesday, March 26.
With these victories, Cal Poly (15-3, 4-1 Big West) matched its longest winning streak of the season, extending it to six straight matches. The Mustangs overpowered both the Sharks (6-9, 5-2 PacWest) and the Rainbow Wahine (7-7, 5-3 Big West), reinforcing their position as a force in collegiate tennis.
Dunkle Approaching Program History
Senior Peyton Dunkle added two singles victories, tying Sheila Lewis for the second-most dual singles wins in Cal Poly history with 49. She is now just two wins away from breaking the all-time record.
Tuesday: Cal Poly Rolls Past Hawai’i Pacific, 6-1
The Mustangs started their island road trip in dominant fashion, overwhelming Hawai’i Pacific.
In doubles play, Romane Mosse and Kennedy Buntrock delivered a commanding 6-1 win at No. 2, marking their fifth straight victory and improving their season record to 10-3. Natalie Lynch and Jessica MacCallum secured the doubles point with a tight 6-4 win at No. 3, pushing their season record to 4-1.
Dunkle led the charge in singles, stepping up to the No. 1 spot and breezing to a 6-1, 6-1 victory. With this win, she tied for third place in career dual singles victories at Cal Poly with 48.
Lynch dominated at No. 4, winning 6-0, 6-1 and improving to 11-4 this season. Alexandra Ozerets clinched the match at No. 3 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory, tying for 10th place in program history with 41 career singles wins.
The emotional highlight of the day came from Amy Leather, who, after a year sidelined by injury, secured her first career singles win with a 7-5, 6-2 victory. Sarah MacCallum closed out the strong singles performance with a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 5.
Wednesday: Cal Poly Earns Third Ranked Win of the Season
Facing No. 70 Hawai’i, the Mustangs continued their winning ways, securing their third victory over a ranked opponent this season. The win marked Cal Poly’s 15th of the season, the most since their 17-7 finish in 2022, and one of the top six seasons in the program’s Division I history.
In doubles, Lynch and MacCallum won 6-3 at No. 3, extending their record to 5-1 and their winning streak to four matches. Mosse and Buntrock clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory, improving to 11-3 for the season.
Hawai’i briefly evened the match at 1-1 with a win at No. 1 singles, but Lynch quickly responded with a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 6, bringing her season record to 12-4.
Four of the remaining singles matches went to third sets. Ozerets pulled out a clutch win at No. 4, improving to 13-4 this season.
Dunkle provided the match’s defining moment. After dropping the first set 2-6, she battled back to win 6-4, 6-3, securing the dual match for Cal Poly and tying for second on the program’s all-time singles wins list.
MacCallum sealed the 5-2 victory with a 6-1, 6-7 (0-7), 6-4 win at No. 5. Her fifth straight victory marked her 14th win in the last 15 matches, making her one of the team’s most reliable performers.
