The Hong Kong women’s rugby team made history by winning the inaugural Melrose Claymores on Sunday, defeating Kazakhstan 45-5 at the Hong Kong Sevens. This victory marks a significant achievement for the team, who were runners-up to China in last year’s tournament.
In the men’s tournament, the Hong Kong team triumphed over China with a dominant 38-5 win, successfully defending their Melrose Claymores title.
The matches at the Kai Tak Stadium showcased outstanding displays of skill and teamwork from both the Hong Kong women’s and men’s teams.
For the women’s team, their determination was clear after last year’s narrow loss. They opened the scoring first, but Kazakhstan quickly responded. However, the game shifted when a Kazakhstani player was sent off for an aggressive tackle. With a numerical advantage, the Hong Kong team took control and secured their first-ever Melrose Claymores victory.
The men’s team, although trailing early in their final, turned the tide by the second half. With two quick tries, they extended their lead to 24-5, holding off China’s efforts to come back and sealing their victory with a 38-5 scoreline to defend their title.
