Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has approved the appointment of Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz as the new President of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) for the 2025-2029 term.
Zafrul confirmed the development, stating that Anwar had given his approval after considering Zafrul’s current role as a minister, which will end in December. This will allow him to fully focus on BAM after that time.
“I would like to thank the prime minister for giving me the opportunity to lead BAM,” Zafrul said. “He considered that my term as a minister ends in December, and after that, I can focus on BAM,” he added. He spoke to reporters following the Iftar Kasih Ukhwah Programme at the Kelana Jaya Community College on Tuesday.
Last August, the Cabinet decided that members of the government, including ministers and deputy ministers, should not compete for positions in any sports association.
On Tuesday, BAM’s acting president, Datuk V Subramaniam, revealed that a majority of BAM council members had agreed to nominate Zafrul as the next president. Subramaniam emphasized the need for strong and stable leadership to propel BAM forward.
The BAM election will take place on May 10 during the association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM).
Zafrul expressed his gratitude for the nomination in a post on social media, saying he was honored by BAM’s trust in him to lead the organization.
Previously, Zafrul was almost appointed as BAM president to succeed Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria, who had initially planned to resign early last year. However, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh encouraged Mohamad Norza to stay in office until the 2024 Paris Olympics. After the Olympics, BAM appointed Subramaniam as acting president until the May AGM.
