The Longwood men’s tennis team held early leads against William & Mary on Wednesday but couldn’t hold off the Tribe, who won three of the final four singles matches to secure a 4-3 victory at the Mackesy Tennis Center.
Doubles Play
Longwood (5-7) started strong by claiming the doubles point. Mauricio Gonzalez Paiva and Timéo Puech earned a victory on court one, defeating Nikita Bortnichek and Raz Katz. Meanwhile, Marko Mrdak and Alejandro Uribe sealed the point with a 6-4 win over Oliver Hague and Albert Hansen on court three.
Singles Play
William & Mary (4-8) responded quickly in singles. Hague leveled the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Petar Belosevic on court two. Gonzalez Paiva then regained the lead for Longwood, defeating Bortnichek 6-4, 6-4 on court three.
Katz tied the match again at 2-2 with a comeback victory against Petter Lindquist at No. 6. After dropping the first set in a tiebreak, Katz dominated the next two sets, winning 6-1, 6-0.
William & Mary pulled ahead as Gur Trakhtenberg edged Puech in a tight three-set match, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, at No. 1 singles. Hansen then secured the clinching point, narrowly defeating Uribe 7-6 (5), 7-5 at No. 4.
Mrdak wrapped up the day with a hard-fought three-set win against Sean Joseph at No. 5, rallying from a first-set loss to win 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (6).
Looking Ahead
Longwood returns to Big South Conference play on Friday, hosting Presbyterian at 1 p.m. in Farmville.
