No. 62 Dartmouth men’s tennis secured a hard-fought 4-3 win over UC San Diego on Tuesday, closing out its road trip to California on a high note.
Doubles Play
The Big Green started strong in doubles. Miles Groom and Henry Ren were the first to secure a victory, sweeping their second doubles match for their second win of the season as a pair.
Denny Bao and Alex Knox-Jones clinched the doubles point for Dartmouth with a 6-4 win, improving their record to 4-0 this season.
Yujiro Onuma and Waleed Qadir were locked in a close battle at first doubles, tied at 5-5 when their match was left unfinished.
Singles Play
Groom extended Dartmouth’s lead with a dominant straight-set win at fourth singles, taking the first set 6-1 and sealing the match with a 6-3 victory in the second. He improved to 12-2 this season and is currently on a six-match winning streak.
Onuma added the third point with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at fifth singles, moving to 10-4 this spring and 2-0 when playing in the third position.
Knox-Jones delivered the match-clinching win at sixth singles. He took the first set 6-3 and repeated the score in the second, bringing his season singles record to 8-3.
Carlos Guerrero Alvarez competed in first singles but fell 6-2, 7-6.
Hikaru Takeda started strong in third singles with a 6-1 first-set win but lost momentum, dropping the second set 6-4 before falling 10-4 in the tiebreaker.
Ren played in second singles, battling hard but ultimately losing 6-3, 7-6.
Looking Ahead
Dartmouth concludes non-conference play with an 11-5 record, tied for the third-most wins in the Ivy League. The Big Green will begin Ivy League competition on Sunday, March 30, when they host Harvard in Hanover at 2 p.m.
