University of Bath student-athlete Toby Dillingham has played a key role in helping Avon clinch the Badminton England Senior County Championships Premiership title for the first time.
The Mechanical Engineering student, supported by the Student Performance Sport Breakthrough Programme, earned a crucial victory in the men’s doubles alongside Barney Chua Yue Chern. Their win helped Avon defeat Surrey 7-4 in the final league fixture on Sunday.
With six wins from nine matches, Avon topped the standings, finishing two points ahead of Surrey. The team won 57 rubbers over the season, while Surrey secured 55.
Joining Dillingham in the victorious squad were University of Bath alumni Cara Collins, Devon Minnis, and Stephanie Pinharry, along with current University of Bath badminton performance squad player Martha Ng.
In other badminton news, double Paralympic silver medallist Dan Bethell narrowly lost to Ukraine’s Oleksandr Chyrkov in the SL3 final at the Spanish Para Badminton International in Toledo. Bethell was defeated 21-17, 13-21, 21-17 in a match that lasted 139 minutes, marking the second-longest match ever recorded.
