The 18th-ranked Babson College men’s tennis team swept the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) weekly awards on Monday. First-year standout Edward Wang was named Singles Player of the Week, while the doubles team of senior Brady Anderson and first-year Sebastian Mendoza earned Doubles Team of the Week honors.
Wang’s Impressive Singles Performance
Wang had a dominant week, going 4-0 in singles play as Babson (11-2, 2-0 NEWMAC) won five of six matches. He earned victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, including a hard-fought 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 win over No. 31 Salisbury’s Gurv Suri. Wang also defeated Aiden Klass of No. 33 Grinnell (6-2, 6-2), Bohdlan Zhylchuck of No. 24 North Carolina Wesleyan (2-6, 6-0, 6-4), and Andy Hess of No. 32 Chapman (6-0, 6-1).
With an 18-2 singles record, Wang leads Babson in wins and is just one victory away from tying the program’s single-season record of 19, set by 1998 NCAA singles national champion David Weisman.
Anderson and Mendoza Excel in Doubles
The duo of Anderson and Mendoza went 4-1 at No. 2 doubles, playing a key role in Babson’s success during its California road trip. They secured 6-3 wins over teams from No. 31 Salisbury, Whittier, and No. 33 Grinnell. After a close 6-4 loss to North Carolina Wesleyan’s Martin Cardestig and Bernardo Messineo, they rebounded with a 6-3 victory against No. 35 Chapman’s Ian Jordan and Lachlan Dickinson.
The pair has been tested against top competition, posting a 5-2 record in March with six of their seven matches coming against nationally ranked opponents. Anderson holds a 12-6 doubles record this season, while Mendoza is 11-10.
Upcoming Matches
Babson will return home for three consecutive NEWMAC matches, starting with a matchup against Salve Regina on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Babson Tennis Courts.
