The University of Richmond baseball team avoided a series sweep with a hard-fought 12-10 victory over Saint Joseph’s on Sunday at Smithson Field. The win improves the Spiders’ record to 20-4 overall and 4-2 in Atlantic 10 play.
Richmond will return to action Tuesday, facing James Madison in Harrisonburg, with first pitch set for 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
The Spiders took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, capitalizing on a mix of walks, a Saint Joseph’s throwing error, and a single from Jack Arcamone that drove in the opening run. However, the Hawks responded immediately, scoring three runs off Richmond starter Jackson Hinchliffe, who was replaced by Brian Reinke after allowing three hits, a walk, and a wild pitch. Reinke steadied the game, tossing four scoreless innings while allowing just one hit to earn the win.
Richmond regained control with two runs in the second before breaking the game open in the fourth. Arcamone launched a grand slam—his seventh home run of the season—to extend the Spiders’ lead to 9-3. They added another run in the fifth on a groundout.
Saint Joseph’s mounted a comeback in the sixth, scoring six runs off three Richmond pitchers. Jason Shockley and Chayse Gruber struggled on the mound, combining to allow five walks, two hits, and three wild pitches. Dylan Siesky then stepped in, conceding one hit before striking out three batters to end the inning.
DJ Pacheco gave Richmond breathing room in the eighth with his third home run of the season, a deep shot over the trees in left field, pushing the lead to 12-9. The Hawks managed to add one more run, but Angel Santiago-Cruz shut the door, recording his second save of the week with two solid innings of relief.
