Commonwealth Games bronze medallists Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand stormed into the quarter-finals of the Swiss Open 2025 badminton tournament with a commanding win over Germany’s Selin Hubsch and Amelie Lehmann in Basel on Thursday.
The Indian duo, ranked ninth in the world in women’s doubles, dominated their round of 16 clash, securing a swift 21-12, 21-8 victory in just 38 minutes against the 119th-ranked German pair.
Treesa and Gayatri will now face Hong Kong China’s eighth-seeded duo, Yeung Nga Ting and Yeung Pui Lam, on Friday for a spot in the semi-finals of the BWF Super 300 tournament.
Tough Day for Indian Singles Players
In the men’s singles category, former world No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth suffered a straight-game defeat against China’s Li Shifeng, currently ranked sixth in the world. Srikanth fought hard in the early stages, holding his own at 10-10 in the first game. However, the reigning Asian Games champion pulled ahead with a six-point streak and closed out the match 21-15, 21-11 in just 37 minutes.
Priyanshu Rajawat also faced disappointment, losing 21-15, 21-17 to France’s Toma Junior Popov.
Indian Women’s Singles Challenge Ends
India’s campaign in women’s singles came to an end as both Anupama Upadhyaya and Isharani Baruah bowed out in hard-fought matches. Isharani lost to China’s Han Qian Xi in a tight three-game battle (19-21, 21-18, 18-21), while Anupama fell to Indonesia’s fourth seed Putri Wardani 21-17, 21-19.
Upcoming Indian Matches
Sankar Subramanian, ranked 64th in men’s singles, is set to take on world No. 2 Anders Antonsen of Denmark later in the day. Additionally, India’s mixed doubles duo Sathish Karunakaran and Aadya Variyatth will also be in action.
Meanwhile, two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, Malvika Bansod, and rising star Anmol Kharb all exited the tournament after first-round losses on Wednesday.
