Western Carolina University’s football team faced unseasonably cold temperatures on Thursday as they continued spring practice at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field. Despite the official start of spring, the weather felt more like late November, with overcast skies and dropping temperatures creating chilly, breezy conditions.
The two-hour practice session, the team’s sixth of the spring, featured helmets with Guardian caps and shoulder pads. The workout included individual position drills, unit-focused exercises, and competitive sessions where skill players faced off, while linemen battled in one-on-one blocking drills.
Both Offense and Defense Shine
Throughout the day, Western Carolina’s four quarterbacks took turns leading the offense, delivering scoring passes in drills. The defense responded with multiple pass breakups, coverage sacks, and a pair of interceptions, making for a competitive practice.
Later in the session, the team transitioned into red zone drills, where both the offense and defense found success. The practice wrapped up with special teams work, led by Kerry Webb, focusing on punt return drills designed to create more dynamic and competitive returns.
Looking Ahead
Thursday’s session marked a key point in spring training, as the team approaches the midpoint of its 15 allotted practices. With a rest day ahead, players were eager to regroup and prepare for Saturday’s scrimmage, which will serve as an important test for both sides of the ball.
