Hong Kong Men’s Rugby Team Ready to Defend Title at Home in Rugby Sevens

The Hong Kong, China men’s rugby team is preparing to harness the energy of the home crowd as they gear up for the Rugby Sevens, which will take place later this month at the newly built Kai Tak Sports Park.

The squad will compete in the Melrose Claymores competition, a tournament featuring top Asian teams running alongside the main Sevens event. They will be aiming to defend their title after last year’s success.

Head coach Peter Jericevich expressed confidence in his team but emphasized the importance of staying focused, especially for their tournament opener against China on March 28.

“It was great to win last year, but our focus is on the first game,” Jericevich said. “We can’t get ahead of ourselves. Right now, it’s about preparing well this week and making sure we execute in key areas.”

Boost from the Home Crowd

Jericevich believes playing at the new stadium will provide his squad with a significant mental edge.

“What I like about the new venue is how close the fans are to the pitch. The energy will definitely help us,” he said. “Sevens rugby is tough because fatigue sets in quickly, but having a passionate home crowd behind us can push us through.”

Captain’s Leadership in the Spotlight

Team captain James Christie is eager to lead his squad, drawing on his experience from previous editions of the Sevens. He hopes to guide the younger players and help them adjust to the tournament’s intensity.

“I can share what the Sevens was like before and how it felt to play on this stage,” Christie said after an open training session. “We help each other out, and if any of the new guys need advice, we’re there for them.”

The captain, who took on the role in September, also reflected on the electric atmosphere from last year’s event.

“Last year, we couldn’t hear anything because the crowd was so loud,” Christie recalled. “You just have to embrace it and enjoy it—it only happens once a year.”

Hong Kong’s rugby team is determined to make the most of this rare opportunity to compete on home soil, with hopes of defending their title and giving fans plenty to cheer about.
