The University of Richmond baseball team pulled off a major upset Wednesday night, defeating No. 23 Virginia 6-2 at Davenport Field in Disharoon Park. The victory extended Richmond’s winning streak to 12 games and marked the program’s first win over Virginia since 2018.
The Spiders also ended the Cavaliers’ impressive 31-game midweek non-conference win streak, which had stood since 2022. With the win, Richmond improved to 19-2 on the season and will now travel to Philadelphia for a weekend Atlantic 10 series against Saint Joseph’s. The three-game series begins Friday at 3 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
Peacock Leads the Way on the Mound
Starting pitcher Gerry Peacock delivered a strong performance for Richmond, earning his second win of the season. He pitched 4.1 innings, allowing just two hits and one run while striking out five.
The Spiders struck first in the second inning when Trevor Dosenback hit a two-out, two-run double down the left field line. Later in the frame, Jordan Jaffe extended the lead to 4-0 with a two-out double to left-center. Richmond capitalized on four walks and three hits to build an early advantage.
Michael Elko added another run in the third, scoring on Cole Palmeri’s groundout to make it 5-0. In the fifth, DJ Pacheco blasted a solo home run over the left field bleachers, stretching the lead to 6-0.
Richmond Bullpen Shuts Down Virginia
Virginia managed to score single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but Richmond’s bullpen held firm in the late frames.
Brian Reinke pitched a scoreless inning despite issuing two walks, while Chayse Gruber allowed one run on two hits and a walk, striking out one in 0.2 innings. Tyler Rigot worked through trouble in the seventh, striking out two while allowing two hits and a walk.
Glenn Smith provided 1.2 innings of solid relief, surrendering just one hit and one walk with a strikeout. In the ninth, Kellen Heney allowed a hit before Angel Santiago-Cruz closed out the game, escaping a bases-loaded jam to secure the win.
