PV Sindhu’s Struggles Continue with Early Swiss Open Exit

Former world champion PV Sindhu suffered another early exit, bowing out in the first round of the Swiss Open 2025. She lost to Denmark’s Julie Jakobsen in straight games on Wednesday in Basel, Switzerland.

Sindhu, currently ranked 17th in the world, struggled against the 31st-ranked Jakobsen, losing 21-17, 21-19 in a match that lasted 61 minutes. This marks her third consecutive first-round loss this year.

The Indian badminton star began 2025 with a quarter-final appearance at the India Open but has since faced early exits at the Indonesia Masters, All England Open, and now the Swiss Open—a tournament she won in 2022.

Srikanth Battles Past Prannoy; Sankar Impresses

In the men’s singles event, former world No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth overcame a tough challenge from fellow Indian HS Prannoy. He secured a 23-21, 23-21 victory in his opening round at the BWF Super 300 tournament.

Currently ranked 49th, Srikanth will face a formidable challenge in the round of 16 against world No. 6 Li Shifeng of China.

Qualifier Sankar Subramanian also progressed with a commanding 21-5, 21-16 win over Magnus Johannesen. Ranked 64th, he now faces an uphill battle against Denmark’s world No. 2 Anders Antonsen in the second round.

Mixed Results for Indian Contingent

Anupama Upadhyaya and Isharani Baruah were among the other Indian players to advance.

Anupama secured a comfortable 21-14, 21-13 victory over rising Indian player Anmol Kharb. Meanwhile, Baruah edged past Aakarshi Kashyap in a tense three-game match, winning 21-18, 17-21, 20-22.

However, it was a disappointing day for several Indian shuttlers. Malvika Bansod, Kiran George, and Ayush Shetty all suffered first-round defeats.
