The William & Mary women’s tennis team continued its strong season with a hard-fought 4-3 win over Fordham on Wednesday afternoon. The victory marks the Tribe’s fifth consecutive win, improving their overall record to 11-2.
W&M secured the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Freshman Mira Kernagis and senior Emma Fernald clinched the decisive match in a tiebreaker. In singles, victories from senior Alessandra Anghel, sophomore Francesca Davis, and senior Ine Stange ensured the Tribe’s win, despite Fordham’s late push in the final three matches.
How It Happened
- Davis and Anghel set the tone early by winning at No. 2 doubles, defeating Lorraine Bergmann and Lily Chitambar 6-1. Their victory improved their overall record as a pair to 11-2.
- After Fordham claimed the No. 1 doubles match, Kernagis and Fernald secured the doubles point for W&M with a 7-6(3) win over Padilla Udaeta and Paola Ueno Dalmonico at No. 3. The duo extended their win streak to five matches, bringing their season record to 10-6.
- In singles, Anghel gave W&M a 2-0 lead with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 win over Julianne Nguyen at No. 2. The senior has now won five straight matches and holds an 18-8 season record.
- Davis followed with a gritty comeback victory at No. 5, overcoming Lily Chitambar 1-6, 6-1, 6-1. Davis leads the team with 21 singles wins this season and improved her dual-match record to 11-2.
- Stange sealed the overall team victory with a 6-2, 7-5 triumph over Paola Ueno Dalmonico at No. 4. The senior extended her winning streak to five matches and improved her dual-match record to 9-3.
- Fordham fought back with wins at No. 1, No. 3, and No. 6, closing the final score to 4-3.
