IUP’s Season Ends in 72-59 Loss to Gannon in Regional Championship

The No. 4 seed Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) women’s basketball team saw its season come to an end with a 72-59 loss to No. 2 seed Gannon in the NCAA Atlantic Region Championship.

IUP finished the 2024-25 season with a 23-8 record, reaching the PSAC Semifinals and the regional championship game.

Wilkerson Shines in Tournament Run

Ellie Wilkerson was named to the All-Region Tournament team after an impressive performance, totaling 46 points, 12 rebounds, two blocks, and five steals in the tournament. She also recorded a game-high nine field goals in the semifinal round.

In the championship matchup, Wilkerson led IUP with 15 points, six field goals, four rebounds, a block, and a steal. Nyshae’ Weaver contributed 14 points, six field goals, and eight rebounds, while Shamia Strayhorn added four assists and three steals.

Game Recap

The first quarter saw both teams trading baskets before Gannon took a slight lead with back-to-back three-pointers near the four-minute mark. Strayhorn and Lily Jordan responded with consecutive baskets, keeping IUP within five points at 19-14.

IUP struggled to score early in the second quarter, with its first point coming from a Marin Miller free throw at the 7:19 mark. Wilkerson and Weaver combined for three baskets, but Gannon extended its lead to 28-21. A Jordan layup and two free throws from Janeira Scott closed the half with IUP trailing 33-25.

Wilkerson led the team with eight points in the first half, while three other players each added four points.

Second Half Surge Falls Short

Weaver opened the third quarter with four quick points, and a three-pointer from Grace Centrualla at 6:09 brought IUP within four at 36-32. However, Gannon responded with a seven-point run. Wilkerson drained a three-pointer as time expired in the quarter, keeping IUP in contention.

In the final quarter, Jordan’s layup and five made free throws helped IUP cut the deficit to single digits. Baskets from Weaver and Wilkerson brought the Hawks within six at 58-52 with three minutes left. Despite their efforts, Gannon secured the win with late free throws and key baskets.

Looking Ahead

Despite the loss, IUP’s strong season featured deep postseason success and standout performances from key players. With a solid core returning, the team will look to build on this year’s achievements in the next campaign.
