Danish sportswear brand Hummel is bringing back a legendary piece of football history. The company, in collaboration with the Danish Football Federation (DBU), is relaunching Denmark’s 1988 European Championship jersey—once worn by football greats like Michael Laudrup, Morten Olsen, and Preben Elkjaer.
The jersey, recognized for its classic red base with a subtle jacquard pattern, features white details, including Hummel’s signature chevrons and bold block stripes.
“After huge demand from Danish fans, we are thrilled to bring back the iconic national team jersey from Euro ’88,” said Hummel’s Marketing Director, Morten Lund. “Though this jersey wasn’t part of Denmark’s greatest footballing victories, it represents an era that put Danish football on the world map. Fans deserve the chance to relive those memories and wear a piece of national team history.”
Originally introduced for the 1988 European Championship in Germany, the jersey witnessed Denmark’s struggles in the so-called “group of death” against Spain, Italy, and hosts West Germany. Sepp Piontek’s squad exited the tournament early, finishing with a 2-7 goal difference.
The jersey later became part of Denmark’s 1990 World Cup qualification campaign, including a commanding 7-1 home victory against Greece. However, the dream ended with a 3-1 defeat to Romania, led by football legend Gheorghe Hagi.
This relaunch gives Danish fans a chance to celebrate a pivotal moment in their football history, despite the setbacks of the era.
