China’s top seed Shi Yuqi secured his second men’s singles title at the All England Open Badminton Championships on Sunday, defeating Lee Chia-hao of Chinese Taipei 21-17, 21-19 in a hard-fought final.
Shi, 29, reached his fourth All England final after overcoming compatriot and defending champion Li Shifeng in the semifinals. Reflecting on his victory, the 2018 champion emphasized his strategy of keeping rallies long and capitalizing on his opponent’s mistakes.
“It’s been seven years,” Shi said to the crowd. “A lot has happened—ups and downs—but I finally made it because of your support.”
In the women’s singles final, South Korea’s top seed An Se-young staged a remarkable comeback to defeat China’s Wang Zhiyi, the second seed, 13-21, 21-18, 21-18. An, the reigning Olympic champion, continued her unbeaten run this year, marking her fourth consecutive tournament victory.
“The final was extremely tough,” An admitted. “I had so many emotions during the second game, but I kept telling myself not to give up.” She sealed the crucial second game by winning four consecutive points while trailing 17-18.
In the doubles events, China’s Guo Xinwa and Chen Fanghui claimed their first mixed doubles title, while Japan’s Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida secured victory in the women’s doubles.
South Korea’s Kim Won-ho and Seo Seung-jae emerged victorious in the men’s doubles, defeating Indonesia’s Leo Rolly Carnando and Bagas Maulana.
