Anyone who has attended a Cal Poly women’s tennis match in the past two seasons may have noticed a young, enthusiastic supporter in the team’s pre-match huddles. Her name is Brooke Fritz, a 9-year-old from Atascadero, and she has become an irreplaceable part of the Mustangs’ journey.
At every home match, Brooke dresses in full uniform to match the team and cheers passionately from the sidelines. She is more than just a fan—she is a source of motivation and strength for the players.
“Brooke has become an integral part of our team,” said Cal Poly junior Sarah MacCallum. “She always brings a big smile, and her support reminds us why we love this sport. We are so lucky to share this experience with her.”
Brooke joined the Mustangs last season through Team IMPACT, an organization that connects children battling serious illnesses with college sports teams to foster support and encouragement. At age 3, Brooke was diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome, a rare kidney disorder.
Her parents, Kristina and Mark, first noticed something was wrong during a flight in 2018 when Brooke’s eyes became swollen, and she began vomiting. A doctor later confirmed the nephrotic syndrome diagnosis, leading to countless hospital visits, including a 22-day stay where Brooke suffered congestive heart and kidney failure. Despite years of relapses, she has continued to fight through her condition.
Although Brooke’s health is now more stable thanks to medical care, she still faces challenges. Her involvement with Cal Poly women’s tennis has provided her with a renewed sense of confidence and belonging.
“This experience has helped Brooke be part of a team where they support each other,” said Kristina. “She cheers the girls on in their matches, and they cheer her on in her fight.”
Since joining the team, Brooke’s presence has had a profound effect. Head coach Ellie Edles Williams knew from the beginning that the young girl would make an impact. Last season, Cal Poly secured its second-ever Big West Championship and first since 2003, fighting for every point with the same resilience Brooke has shown in her journey.
“From the first time I met her, I knew she was a perfect fit for our team,” Williams said. “She reminds us why we love sports and what it means to be part of a team and a family.”
