The Creighton women’s tennis team wrapped up its spring break trip to Florida with a 5-2 victory over Connecticut College on Friday afternoon at the Oak St. Courts in Orlando.
With the win, the Bluejays improved to 9-6 on the season, while Connecticut College dropped to 3-5 overall.
Creighton took control early by sweeping all three doubles matches. Senior Valerie Negin and freshman Olivia Minikel secured a 6-2 win at the No. 1 doubles spot. The victory marked Negin’s 62nd career doubles win, tying her for fourth place on Creighton’s all-time list with Jennie Hartjes.
Freshmen Alem Cote and Karli Vo clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Elsa Jurrens and freshman Philippa Roy followed with another 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles, giving Creighton a 1-0 lead.
Connecticut College tied the match at 1-1 after receiving a default win at No. 6 singles, as Creighton only had five available players. However, the Bluejays quickly regained momentum with straight-set wins on four singles courts.
Roy dominated on the No. 2 court with a 6-0, 6-3 victory, while Cote earned a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles, pushing Creighton’s lead to 3-1.
The Camels fought back with a win on the No. 1 court, where a three-set battle ended in a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 victory for Connecticut College. But Jurrens sealed the match for Creighton with a decisive 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles. Vo added a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles to secure the 5-2 final score.
