Defender Antonio Rudiger delivered the decisive spot-kick after two Atletico players missed their chances. Marcos Llorente’s shot hit the crossbar, while Julian Alvarez’s penalty was ruled out after he slipped, causing the ball to strike his right foot twice.
This victory marks another chapter in Real Madrid’s dominance over their city rivals in the competition. The club famously defeated Atletico in a penalty shootout to claim the 2016 Champions League title and have now eliminated them four times in consecutive years.
With this win, Madrid moves on to the quarterfinals, where they will face Arsenal. Aston Villa and Borussia Dortmund also secured their spots in the next round on Wednesday.
