The Bucknell men’s tennis team delivered a commanding 5-1 victory over UNC Greensboro on Monday at the UNCG Tennis Courts. The win helped the Bison rebound from a close 4-3 loss to Richmond on Saturday, improving their season record to 8-4.
Adam Stavrakas, Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega, and Liam Kilmer each won twice as Bucknell evened its all-time series against UNCG at 1-1. The Spartans had won the only previous meeting 6-1 in 2017.
In doubles action, all three matches were tightly contested. The Bison secured the doubles point with wins on Courts 2 and 3. After splitting the first two matches, Kilmer and Shiv Singh clinched the point with a 7-5 win over Andrew Black and Devon Moskowitz at No. 3. The duo jumped out to a 3-0 lead, fell behind 5-4, then rallied to win three straight games.
Bain and Stavrakas continued their strong play with a 6-4 victory over Luke Thomson and William Elmers at No. 2. At No. 1, Amar Tahirovic and Brendan McDonald fell in a tiebreaker to Tymofy Khrystyuk and John Gabelic.
Stavrakas and Tahirovic have been dominant in Bucknell’s top two singles spots all season. Alternating between No. 1 and No. 2, the duo has powered the Bison to a 9-1 record at the top spot and a perfect 12-0 mark at No. 2 this spring.
Stavrakas improved to 23-3 on the season with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Khrystyuk on Court 1. Tahirovic followed with a flawless 6-0, 6-0 sweep against Gabelic at No. 2, boosting his season record to 20-3.
