The Gustavus baseball team continued their unbeaten streak with a dominant 14-9 win over Bethany Lutheran Thursday. The Gusties remain perfect on the season, now 6-0, after a season-high 17-hit performance.
Bethany took an early 1-0 lead in the first, but Gustavus responded in a big way, scoring four runs in the bottom of the inning. Brady Schmitz walked with the bases loaded for an RBI, Tomas Nelson hit a two-run double, and Luke Siegle added a single to left to bring in the fourth run.
The Gusties extended their lead in the second with Brayden Kohls driving in Chris Knowles, and then added three more runs in the third. Ross Hebel scored on a Sam Schneider single, while Danny Gavin brought in both Knowles and Schneider with a base hit.
Bethany Lutheran fought back in the fourth with three runs, forcing Gustavus starter Adam Biewen to exit the game. Biewen finished with three earned runs, six hits, and four strikeouts in his season debut. The Vikings cut the lead to 7-5 in the fifth, but Gustavus reliever Logan Feeney came in and struck out the next batter to halt the rally.
The Gusties answered with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Schmitz and Nelson each had an RBI single, extending the lead to 9-5. After a scoreless sixth, Kohls and Siegle added RBIs in the seventh, and Schmitz tacked on a two-run double in the eighth for a 14-6 lead.
Feeney was outstanding in relief, pitching 3.1 innings of shutout, no-hit ball while striking out five. Despite a three-run rally by Bethany in the ninth, Gustavus held on for the win.
Gavin and Schmitz led the offense with four hits apiece. Gavin finished with four runs, two RBIs, and a stolen base, while Schmitz had two doubles, four RBIs, two walks, and a stolen base.
Gustavus will continue its tournament play tomorrow evening against Linfield University in Tucson.
