The family of a young girl who tragically died after being hit by a car on a football pitch in Cumbria have described her as a “force of nature.” Poppy Atkinson, 10, was killed during a training session at Kendal Rugby Club on Wednesday evening.
Poppy’s family remembered her as the “focal point” of their lives, saying she had dreamed of becoming a professional footballer and playing for Manchester United. Despite the tragic incident, they fondly recalled her determination, energy, and passion for the game.
An eight-year-old girl, also from Kendal, was injured in the crash and taken to the hospital but is expected to recover.
Cumbria Police have arrested a 40-year-old man from Lancaster on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. They emphasized that there is no indication the incident was deliberate. He remains in custody.
Poppy’s family said: “She was a force of nature. She was so special, she was too good for this world. Her love for football, her character, and her spirit left a lasting impact on all who knew her. We will never be whole again.”
The local school, Old Hutton CE Primary School, where Poppy was a student, expressed grief, with headteacher Nick Turley describing her as a source of joy and light. Manchester United also sent their condolences, with a statement saying they were “heartbroken” by the loss.
Eyewitness Scott Denney, whose son was also at the training session, described the moment the car crashed onto the pitch. He said it was “sheer panic” as the vehicle appeared suddenly, causing confusion and fear among the children. Coaches quickly acted to move the children away from the scene.
Tributes have been laid outside Kendal Rugby Club, which has cancelled its weekend fixtures. The club’s director, Reg Burrow, said staff were in shock, unable to explain how the car ended up on the field.
Poppy’s football team, Kendal United, said they would continue with training sessions to provide stability for young players affected by the tragedy. Welfare officers are on hand to support players and their families during this difficult time.
