App State Baseball fought hard but ultimately fell to No. 15 Wake Forest, losing 14-6 at Smith Stadium on Tuesday. The Mountaineers held a slim 3-2 lead heading into the seventh inning, but the Demon Deacons exploded for nine runs in the frame to secure the win.
Juan Correa led the charge for App State with a two-run homer in the third inning, driving in three runs with a 411-foot blast to left. Correa added another homer in the eighth inning, a two-run shot down the right-field line, bringing his season total to seven. His efforts weren’t enough, though, as Wake Forest’s late offensive explosion proved too much to overcome.
The Mountaineers (6-6) received strong pitching early, with starters Cal Clark, Bradley Wilson, and Zach Lewis combining for four scoreless innings. The Demon Deacons (11-3) finally got on the board in the fifth inning with a solo home run and a two-out RBI double, pulling within 3-2.
Wake Forest’s big rally came in the seventh inning, starting with four consecutive walks. A bases-loaded walk tied the game, and a pinch-hit double from Matt Scannell gave the Deacons a 5-3 lead. A fielder’s choice and a series of two-RBI hits pushed Wake Forest’s lead to 11-3, essentially sealing the game.
App State fought back in the later innings, with Graham Smiley hitting a 415-foot homer in the seventh, and Correa’s second homer of the night cutting the deficit to 11-6. However, Wake Forest tacked on three more runs in the ninth to secure the 14-6 victory.
App State will return to action on Friday at 4 p.m. for the start of a weekend series at the College of Charleston.
