Baylor women’s tennis team is off to a strong start this season with a 9-1 record, marking their best start since the 2019-20 season. As Big 12 play begins, the Bears are led by a talented group of underclassmen, including sophomore Zuzanna Kubacha and freshman Wenfei Yu.
Head coach Joey Scrivano praised the team’s focus and drive. He noted that it’s easy for players to lose concentration after securing a few points, but this team stays motivated throughout. “This group is really good at keeping their spirit up over the scoreboard,” Scrivano said.
Kubacha, who hails from Piechanin, Poland, has been instrumental in the team’s success. She represented Poland at the 2019 European Youth Summer Olympic Festival and was ranked No. 132 in the ITF junior rankings. Despite her impressive record, Kubacha remains focused on enjoying the game rather than her undefeated streak. “I don’t think about being undefeated at all,” Kubacha said. “I focus on playing the right way, being joyful, and being grateful for where I am.”
Kubacha’s focus has paid off. She started strong in the fall with a 4-1 singles record and has since remained undefeated in singles, with a 10-0 record in the spring. She has also lost just two doubles matches. She believes that the team’s strong support system is key to their success, emphasizing the importance of playing with joy and gratitude.
Yu, who came to Baylor from Beijing, China, quickly found success in singles before pairing with Kubacha in doubles. Though she wasn’t experienced in doubles before joining Baylor, her chemistry with Kubacha has been exceptional. “I just listen to the coaches and we just do it,” Yu said.
Kubacha, Yu, and the rest of the Bears will begin Big 12 play against Cincinnati on Friday at noon at the Hurd Tennis Center.
