Second seed Casper Ruud withdrew from the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC on Wednesday evening due to a stomach illness, allowing 19-year-old Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez to advance to the quarter-finals.
Ruud, who reached the final of this ATP 500 event last year, had cruised through his first-round match against Arthur Rinderknech on Monday, securing his 10th win of 2025. However, he was unable to compete in his second match of the tournament.
“I’m so sorry I had to pull out tonight,” Ruud shared on Instagram. “I was hoping to overcome this stomach illness that showed up yesterday and tried everything I could to play, until the very last moment. I hope to come back stronger in a few days and return to Mexico next year. Thanks for now, Acapulco!”
With Ruud out, Pacheco Mendez, the 19-year-old Mexican player, will face either seventh seed Frances Tiafoe or Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the quarter-finals. On Tuesday, Pacheco Mendez made history by becoming the youngest Mexican man to win an ATP Tour match since 1996.
American Tommy Paul also withdrew from the tournament due to a stomach issue. His scheduled opponent, Marcos Giron, will now play ninth seed Denis Shapovalov, who defeated Alex Michelsen 6-4, 6-3 to advance.
