Álex de Miñaur Discusses the Shift to Power-Driven Tennis

Comparing different eras in tennis is always challenging, especially in a sport like tennis where rapid changes are the norm. Álex de Miñaur, now a consistent top-10 player, was recently asked in Dubai about how the game has evolved since he first started making a name for himself five years ago. His reflections offer valuable insights.

According to De Miñaur, modern tennis is defined by impressive physical conditioning, attention to detail, and significant technological advancements. These changes have led to a level of professionalism that continues to rise rapidly, making the game noticeably different even within a short period. In an interview for the ATP 500 Dubai 2025 website, he shared how the game has shifted since his early days on the tour.

“All players are hitting the ball harder now, and the speed is much higher. Even though there are efforts to slow the ball down, the average speed has still increased compared to years ago. Previously, there was more variety in the game, with changes in pace and trajectory, but now there’s little time to think during the point,” he explained.

De Miñaur highlighted that shots with the kind of spin and angles Rafael Nadal’s forehand once generated are becoming less common. The tactical complexity of the game, he says, has diminished as rallies become more about power than strategy. “Today’s tennis is a battle of big hits. I’ve had to adapt, trying to increase the power of my shots to keep up. It’s a case of adapt or die,” said De Miñaur, who compensates for his lack of natural power with exceptional speed and agility.

His comments encapsulate the fast-evolving nature of modern tennis and the ongoing shift toward power-driven play.
