The New Orleans Privateers women’s tennis team secured a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Jackson State on Wednesday at the Privateer Tennis Center, in a match that lasted nearly four hours.
Iris Danne played a crucial role in the win, rallying from a set down to claim the decisive point. After losing the first set, Danne fought back with a service break to win the second. She then battled through a tough third set, coming from behind three times to tie it 5-5. In the tiebreak, Danne kept her composure, taking a 5-1 lead before winning 7-2 to give the Privateers their third win of the season.
Coach Burzis Kanga praised Jackson State for their strong performance but highlighted his team’s resilience. “It wasn’t an easy match for us, but we came through with the win,” Kanga said. “I just told Iris to relax and play her game. She did well in the tiebreak.”
The Privateers got off to a strong start in doubles, winning on the first two courts. Danne and Anastassia Kouchnareva triumphed 6-2 at No. 1, while Kateryna Kalistratova and Fleur Sprengers won 6-4 at No. 2.
New Orleans gained a 2-0 lead after Sprengers dominated her match 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3. Nouray Khaled secured another point for the Privateers with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-1 win, controlling the pace in the final set.
Jackson State fought back, with Zeina Shaaban tying the match at 3-3. Kalistratova, who had fought hard from a 5-1 deficit, eventually lost 7-5 in the final set, setting up Danne’s victory as the deciding point.
The Privateers will open conference play against Northwestern State on Saturday, March 1, at 11 a.m.
