The Gardner-Webb men’s tennis team (10-2) saw its 10-match winning streak snapped on Tuesday evening as they were defeated by the top-ranked Wake Forest (16-0) at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.
Wake Forest took an early lead, winning both the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches to claim the first point of the match. The Demon Deacons extended their lead by securing the No. 3 singles match. However, Gardner-Webb’s Kim Niethammer got the Runnin’ Bulldogs on the board with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Charlie Robertson in No. 2 singles.
Despite Niethammer’s victory, Wake Forest pulled ahead once again after winning the No. 5 singles match. The match was sealed when Ioannis Xilas triumphed in No. 1 singles. Gardner-Webb’s Boyd Schreiber fought hard to secure a point for his team with a win over Cornelius Shalmi in No. 6 singles.
“While we were disappointed with our doubles performance, we showed improvement in singles,” said head coach Mike Griffith. “We’ve identified areas to improve, and we’ll work on them.”
Gardner-Webb will be back in action on Saturday, March 1, when they host Campbell at 11 a.m.
