Luka Modric delivered a brilliant performance with a spectacular goal in Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Girona in La Liga on Sunday, receiving high praise from coach Carlo Ancelotti.
In the 41st minute, Modric controlled a high clearance from a corner with his chest before striking a powerful volley that flew into the top corner. The 39-year-old’s strike helped secure the win for Madrid.
Since joining the club in 2012, Modric has won 28 trophies with Real Madrid. However, his current contract expires at the end of the season. Ancelotti expressed his admiration for the Croatian midfielder, suggesting that Modric should leave the club on his own terms.
“Modric is a gift to football. He should stay as long as he wants to. We have been lucky to have a legend with us,” Ancelotti said. He further compared Modric’s incredible longevity to that of another former player of his, AC Milan’s Paolo Maldini.
“Football has been given a gift by his seriousness, quality, and professionalism,” Ancelotti added. “I had another 40-year-old player, Maldini. The two can be compared in what a footballer should be. They are fantastic examples. It’s not by chance that they’ve reached 40. Genetics matter, but also commitment and attitude.”
With the win, Real Madrid moved to 54 points, leveling with Barcelona at the top of the La Liga standings.
