The Navy men’s tennis team had a mixed day on Sunday, splitting a doubleheader at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis. The Midshipmen (10-6) started strong with a 6-1 win over Richmond (3-5) but later fell 5-2 to Georgetown (4-6).
In the first match against Richmond, Navy secured the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 flights. Herrick Legaspi and Charlie Spencer claimed a 6-4 victory at No. 1 doubles, tying the score. Aniketh Ayinala and Jason Kim then clinched the point with a hard-fought 7-6 (7-2) win at No. 2 doubles against Paxton Pritchard and Sam Rathmanner.
Richmond briefly leveled the score at 1-1 with a win at No. 6 singles. However, Navy responded with straight-set victories at No. 2 singles (Nathan Nguyen) and No. 3 singles (Ayinala) to take a 3-1 lead. Spencer sealed the team victory with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles against Otto Sewell. Legaspi and Tommy Kim added three-set wins to complete the 6-1 scoreline.
In the second match against Georgetown, the Midshipmen struggled in doubles play, losing all three matches to fall behind early. Georgetown extended its lead to 2-0 with a win at No. 6 singles. Navy fought back, tying the match at 2-2 thanks to wins from Jason Kim at No. 4 singles and Tommy Kim at No. 5 singles. However, Georgetown dominated the remaining matches, securing three-set victories in two of them to close out the 5-2 win.
Looking ahead, Navy will play a split-squad doubleheader on March 2. The team will host Delaware and open its Patriot League schedule at Colgate.
