The Saint Joseph’s men’s tennis team suffered a narrow 4-3 loss to Bucknell on Sunday afternoon in a tightly contested match.
Match Recap
The Hawks claimed the doubles point in a fiercely competitive series. Justus Agbo and Matthew Cizmarik won 7-5 in the third flight, while Othman Bezzaz and Ernesto Ruy triumphed 7-6 (4) in the first flight, securing the early lead for Saint Joseph’s.
Bucknell quickly responded, taking wins in the second and sixth singles flights to pull ahead. However, Santiago Valle leveled the match for the Hawks with a straight-set victory in the third flight.
Despite the momentum shift, Bucknell clinched the match with victories in the first and fourth singles flights. Bezzaz, however, recorded his second win of the day, earning a supertiebreaker victory in the fifth flight, but it wasn’t enough to change the outcome.
Coach’s Comments
“We started off well by winning the doubles point, but I was disappointed with the mental toughness of some of our players today,” said head coach Jeff Puhan. “When things don’t go our way, we need to be tougher.”
