ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women’s tennis team (5-6) is back at home this weekend after a successful road trip to Florida, where they won both of their matches. The Midshipmen will host three matches at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis, Md., kicking off a seven-match homestand that stretches into spring break.
Navy’s weekend starts on Friday at 1 p.m. when Wake Forest (8-3), one of three ACC opponents they will face this season, visits Annapolis. The Midshipmen then turn around quickly for two matches on Saturday, with a 10 a.m. contest against Towson (1-2) followed by a 2 p.m. match against George Mason (2-2).
A Successful Florida Trip
The Navy women’s tennis team went undefeated on their Florida trip last weekend, securing their first road victory of the season with a 5-2 win over Tampa on Friday. The following evening, the Mids triumphed over rival Air Force, 4-2, at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.
In the Tampa match, Navy secured the doubles point with victories from the No. 1 and No. 3 pairings. Senior Emily Tannenbaum and Parvathi Shanker, along with freshmen Emma Gu and Molly Bellia, earned singles wins to seal the victory. Against Air Force, Navy once again led with wins in doubles and singles from Shanker and Tannenbaum. Freshman Emma Gu clinched the win with a 7-5, 7-5 victory on court No. 5.
Tannenbaum Earns Player of the Week Honor
Senior Emily Tannenbaum was named the Patriot League Women’s Tennis Player of the Week after going 4-0 in both singles and doubles play during Navy’s victories over Tampa and Air Force. This marks Tannenbaum’s ninth career Player of the Week honor and her first of the season. She had previously won the award five times last spring.
Sisterly Rivalry
Friday’s match will feature a unique family storyline, as Tannenbaum’s younger sister, Kady, is a freshman starter for Wake Forest. Kady is currently 12-4 in both singles and doubles. This match is one of several sisterly showdowns, as senior Sylvia Eklund will face her twin sister, Addie, when Navy travels to Colgate on March 29.
Puryear Reaches Milestone
Head coach Keith Puryear achieved a significant milestone last weekend, recording his 300th career victory at Navy. With a 303-107 record at Navy and 518-235 career mark, Puryear ranks 20th among Division I women’s tennis coaches all-time and 10th among active coaches.
National Recognition for the Mids
The Midshipmen have earned national recognition in the ITA rankings. Emily Tannenbaum is ranked No. 92 in the latest singles rankings, and she has been part of two ranked doubles teams. Tannenbaum and Parvathi Shanker are ranked 51st, while Tannenbaum and Olivia Fermo are ranked 104th.
Tannenbaum Shattering Records
Tannenbaum continues to set records at Navy. She holds six school records, including for career singles, doubles, and combined wins. Last spring, she set the record for single-season singles wins (33) and career No. 1 singles victories (37).
Scouting Wake Forest
Wake Forest enters Friday’s match with an 8-3 record, riding the momentum of a five-match win streak. The Demon Deacons are led by Brianna Baldi, who has a 13-3 singles record. Sankavi Gownder boasts an 8-2 record in dual matches, and the Tannenbaum sisters are not the only talented sibling duo on the team. Kady Tannenbaum and Nevena Carton hold a 12-4 doubles record. Wake Forest also features graduate transfers Makayla Mills from Kentucky and Anna Zhang from Columbia. Krystal Blanch, ranked No. 95 in singles, and Blanch and Mills, ranked No. 75 in doubles, add to the Deacs’ strong lineup.
