Varsity Blues Help Team Canada Win 2025 Pan American Cup, Earn Spot in Sudirman Cup

Several Varsity Blues badminton players helped Team Canada secure the mixed team championship at the 2025 Pan American Cup, held in Aguas Calientes, Mexico, from February 13-16.

Canada claimed the title with a thrilling 3-1 victory over Team USA in the final. Earlier in the tournament, they dominated pool play, defeating Mexico and Cuba 5-0, before advancing to the semifinals with a 3-1 win over Guatemala.

“It was a total team effort from start to finish,” said Canadian national team head coach Mike Butler. “Everyone on the team contributed, and I’m incredibly proud of each member’s effort.”

Current Varsity Blues athletes who participated as part of Team Canada include Jacqueline Cheung, the 2025 OUA Badminton Female MVP, and Jackie Dent, a 2025 OUA badminton all-star. Both players played key roles in helping the University of Toronto win their second consecutive OUA Championship.

The team also featured Varsity Blues alumni, including Jonathan Lai and four-time Olympian Michelle Li.

With this victory, Team Canada has earned a spot in the 2025 Sudirman Cup, where they will represent the Americas. The world-class event will take place in Xiamen, China, from April 27 to May 4.
