No. 23 Kansas suffered a tough 91-57 loss to BYU on Tuesday night at the Marriott Center, despite Hunter Dickinson’s 12-point, 14-rebound double-double.
BYU was led by Richie Saunders, who scored 22 points, while Trevin Knell added 15 and Mawot Mag contributed 13. The trio combined for 11 successful three-pointers, helping the Cougars (18-8, 9-6 Big 12) secure their third consecutive win.
David Coit chipped in 11 points off the bench for Kansas (17-9, 8-7), but the Jayhawks trailed by as much as 38 points in the second half.
The Cougars were dominant on both ends of the floor, with Mag and Keba Keita each scoring multiple baskets in a 14-2 run that gave BYU a 22-7 lead within the first seven minutes of the game. Kansas head coach Bill Self acknowledged BYU’s performance, saying, “I thought BYU could beat anybody tonight. They were great. And then we didn’t do anything to make them less than great.”
After a six-minute scoring drought for BYU, Kansas closed the gap to 25-17 with a 3-pointer from Rylan Griffen. However, BYU responded with a barrage of three-pointers, making five in the final 6:15 of the first half. Saunders and Knell hit back-to-back threes to extend the lead to 46-26 at halftime.
