Emma Raducanu was defeated by Karolina Muchova in a tough second-round match at the Dubai Tennis Championships.
The British wildcard struggled early on, visibly upset and breathing heavily after Muchova broke to take a 2-0 lead. Despite these difficulties, Raducanu fought back from a 4-0 deficit, managing to force a tie-break, though she lost after missing a set point.
Muchova then gained an early break in the second set and held off Raducanu to secure a 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 victory.
Raducanu, who reached the third round of the Australian Open last month, had climbed back into the world’s top 60 last year after being sidelined for most of 2023 due to wrist and ankle surgeries.
In the opening round of the Dubai tournament, the 22-year-old ended a four-match losing streak—the worst of her career—with a straight-set victory over Greece’s Maria Sakkari.
Following an early break in the first set, Raducanu spoke with the umpire, and Muchova appeared to offer some words of comfort before play resumed.
Muchova, who was the runner-up at the 2023 French Open, will now face McCartney Kessler, who caused an upset by defeating world number three Coco Gauff in straight sets.
