Abby Erceg, the 35-year-old New Zealand international, has signed with Deportivo Toluca, a top-tier club in Mexico’s Liga MX Femenil.
Erceg joins the team after leaving Racing Louisville in the United States when her contract expired. She made her debut for Toluca in a 2-0 defeat against Atlas at the Nemesio Diez Stadium, one of Mexico’s oldest venues with a 30,000-seat capacity.
Before leaving Racing Louisville, Erceg earned the title of Iron Woman for the third time in her career. This title is awarded to players who play every minute of the season for their club. Erceg was one of seven players to earn this honor in the current season, having completed 48 league games across two regular seasons with Racing Louisville. She previously received the Iron Woman recognition during her time at North Carolina Courage.
Born in Whangarei, Erceg made 146 appearances for the New Zealand national team, the Football Ferns, before retiring from international football in 2023. She began her senior club career with Auckland’s Three Kings United and Western Springs. Over the years, she played for several international clubs, including Espanyol (Spain), Adelaide United (Australia), FF USV Jena (Germany), Chicago Red Stars, Western New York Flash, North Carolina Courage, and Racing Louisville. In 2010, she briefly returned to New Zealand to play for Fencibles United.
