Michael Wimmer, who spent over eight years at the Nurnberg academy, is now eager to take advantage of Motherwell’s strong youth setup to benefit the club.
In recent years, the Lanarkshire club has produced talented players such as David Turnbull, Max Johnston, and Lennon Miller from their academy. Now, Wimmer, the new manager, is focused on nurturing more homegrown talent.
“I’ve heard it’s a very good academy,” Wimmer said in an interview with the club’s media. “There are great young players who can be developed. I enjoy working with young players and developing them, and that’s one of my goals here.”
Wimmer also emphasized that he wants to bring a more aggressive, proactive style of play to the team. “What I want to see is a high-energy game, with proactive football, pressing high, controlling games, and having fun with the fans,” he explained.
While adapting to his new squad, Wimmer acknowledged the challenge of getting to know all the players. “It’s a big squad. I need to learn everyone’s name, and it’s difficult, but I enjoy it. It’s a great challenge. I’m here to work hard, not to relax. I’m here to contribute to the club.”
Wimmer has also brought assistant manager Ahmet Koc with him, with whom he has worked previously at Nurnberg and Austria Vienna. “Ahmet has known me for 18 years, and we’ve worked together for 14 years. He’s a great friend, but he’s not here because of that. He’s here because he’s an excellent coach,” Wimmer said.
Koc’s role is key, as Wimmer added, “He has a fantastic relationship with the players and is vital in the dressing room. He’s excellent on the pitch, and his communication with the rest of the staff is essential. It’s never a one-man show or a two-man show—this is a team, and we’re always united.”
