Former tennis star Camila Giorgi, a name once synonymous with both athletic talent and off-court drama, has made an unexpected return to the spotlight—but this time, it’s behind the microphone, not the racket.
The 33-year-old Italian, who retired from professional tennis in 2023, is now carving a new path in the media world. Giorgi is making her debut as a reporter at the ATP 250 tournament in Buenos Aires, Argentina. A former world No.26, she officially announced her retirement when her name appeared on the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s list of retired players in May of that year.
Her shift from tennis to journalism comes after a tumultuous year filled with controversies. These included accusations of unpaid rent for a luxury villa in Calenzano, Italy, and rumors of evading tax authorities—allegations she has steadfastly denied.
From Tennis Court to Media Spotlight
Following her retirement, Giorgi relocated to the United States, where she briefly ventured into a career as a lingerie model. However, her love for tennis has pulled her back into the fold, this time as a media personality. At the Buenos Aires tournament, Giorgi has been interviewing top tennis players, including Argentina’s Sebastián Báez, and sharing highlights from her new role on Instagram.
In one post, she proudly shared a video of her interview with Báez and a photo of her official press credentials, signaling her full embrace of this new chapter.
A Controversial Exit and Defiant Defense
While Giorgi’s return to tennis in the media has been met with some excitement, her personal life continues to draw attention. In October 2023, she faced accusations from her former landlord, who claimed she left her villa in Italy without paying rent and took several pieces of furniture, including rugs and antique tables.
Giorgi quickly addressed these allegations, telling Italy’s Verissimo that the accusations were exaggerated. “Did I suddenly disappear? That’s just their version. I didn’t vanish. I had to announce my retirement in Paris, and when my name appeared on the anti-doping website, the news spread,” she explained.
She also clarified her frequent back-and-forth travel between Italy and the U.S., stating, “We stayed in Miami for three years. I’d love to stay there forever, but I also return to Italy frequently. I just don’t like discussing my personal life, and that makes it seem like I’m hiding.”
Giorgi’s lawyer, Edmondo Tomaselli, firmly denied the accusations, particularly the claims about unpaid rent and missing furniture. Giorgi herself maintained that any furniture left behind was hers to begin with, and insisted, “We did not flee for tax reasons. I never ran, I just never spoke. Did we not pay the rent and take the furniture? The house was empty when we moved in—we brought our own furniture.”
While her post-tennis life may still be shrouded in controversy, Giorgi appears determined to move forward, proving that even in retirement, she remains a force to be reckoned with.
