Ludhiana’s Munish Marwaha has secured the runner-up spot at the prestigious International Masters Tennis Championship in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh. This remarkable achievement at the renowned event, which is part of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Masters Tour, highlights Marwaha’s excellence on the court. The tournament, open to players aged 30 and above, attracted over 100 participants from around the globe.
At 51 years old, Marwaha was the sole representative from Punjab in the competition. Partnering with Jeet Lal Anand of Gorakhpur, he clinched the silver medal in the men’s doubles (plus 50) category. The duo showcased exceptional teamwork and skill, overpowering their opponents to advance to the finals.
In the semi-finals, Marwaha and Anand defeated Sanjeev Jaiswal and Brijesh Singh from Uttar Pradesh with a dominant 6-3, 6-3 victory, securing their place in the championship match. However, in the final, the pair faced a tough challenge from Anuj and Avinash Chandra of Muradabad, falling 2-6, 2-6 to settle for second place.
Marwaha, a former sports teacher at Arya College and former Director of Sports at Sri Aurobindo College of Commerce and Management, has a diverse sports background. After transitioning to competitive tennis, he has continued to excel, having also made his mark in disciplines such as hockey, boxing, fencing, chess, and basketball.
Looking ahead, Marwaha is gearing up for upcoming ITF Masters Tournaments in Jaipur, Dehradun, and Leicester, England, set to begin in April. His runner-up finish in Raebareli serves as a testament to his dedication and skill in the sport.
