Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala experienced a slight dip in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings after another early-round exit at the WTA 125 Mumbai tournament in India.
The 19-year-old, who had previously risen to No. 137, fell two spots to No. 139, though she remains firmly within the top 150 players in the world, a testament to her promising career.
Eala’s highest ranking to date came last month when she reached No. 134 following a semifinal appearance at the Workday Canberra International. However, her momentum stalled after a second-round loss in Mumbai to Japan’s Mai Hontama, 7-6(5), 6-2, preventing her from reaching the quarterfinals.
Earlier, the graduate of the Rafael Nadal Academy in Spain also suffered early exits in the Singapore Open qualifiers and the W100 Bengaluru tournament. In Singapore, she was ousted by Switzerland’s Simona Waltert in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Eala also fell in the second round of Bengaluru to Slovenia’s Dalila Jakupovic, 6-4, 6-4.
Her recent struggles started with a disappointing exit in the Australian Open qualifiers, where Eala’s bid to become the first Filipina to reach the main draw ended with a 7-5, 6-2 loss to Croatia’s Jana Fett in the opening round.
