Arizona men’s tennis senior Colton Smith made history on Friday, becoming the program’s all-time leader in singles wins. Smith now holds 98 career singles victories and continues to build upon his legacy.
The milestone moment arrived after Smith secured a win over Utah State’s Sergi Mico Fenollar in a tightly contested match, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2, marking his 97th career victory. Just a few hours later, he swiftly clinched his 98th win, dominating LMU’s Arthur Pantino 6-1, 6-1.
Smith surpassed Nick Lagaev, who previously set the record with 96 wins last year during his fifth season at Arizona.
“It’s emotional,” Smith reflected after achieving the record. “You’re here for 3.5 to 4 years, so it’s something you always aim for. You see the names on the wall, and you’re aware of the players who came before you. Having Nick do it last year and being part of that team was special. Being able to achieve it this year means a lot.”
This accomplishment adds to Smith’s impressive career, which includes competing in numerous ATP Challenger Tour events. Earlier this month, Smith earned his first professional title at the Cleveland Open on February 2, elevating his ATP ranking from 367 to 259.
The Wildcats will return to action on February 9 as they face Pepperdine.
