Michigan football has strengthened its coaching staff with the return of a familiar face. Following the recent addition of Biff Poggi as associate head coach, the Wolverines have announced that Erik “Soup” Campbell, a former player and coach under Jim Harbaugh, will return to the team as a wide receivers assistant.
Campbell, who played for Michigan under legendary coach Bo Schembechler from 1984 to 1987, has had a lengthy coaching career that spans several programs. After his playing days, he began his coaching journey as a graduate assistant in 1988. His early coaching career included a two-year stint as the running backs coach at Navy before moving on to Ball State and Syracuse.
The Michigan alum returned to his alma mater in 1995, where he served as the Wolverines’ wide receivers coach for 12 years during Lloyd Carr’s tenure. Following Carr’s retirement, Campbell spent time at Iowa, the CFL, and then joined Jim Harbaugh’s staff for a year as a wide receivers assistant.
In recent years, Campbell has continued his coaching career at UConn, Delaware, and Bowling Green, where he spent the last six seasons working under former Michigan player and head coach Scot Loeffler.
Campbell’s return to Ann Arbor signals a new chapter for the Wolverines’ wide receiver corps, bringing valuable experience and a deep connection to Michigan’s football legacy.
