Manchester United’s current plight has drawn sharp criticism from their latest manager, Ruben Amorim, who boldly stated on Sunday that the team might be experiencing its worst season in history. Following a disheartening 3-1 defeat to Brighton, Amorim’s remarks highlight the severity of the club’s struggles, raising concerns among fans and analysts alike about the future of one of football’s most storied franchises.
As it stands, Manchester United occupies the 13th position in the Premier League, accumulating only 26 points after 21 matches. This puts the club perilously close to the relegation zone, significantly trailing the European qualification spots. If the current trend continues, United is on track to record its lowest finish in the Premier League era, having previously ended last season in eighth place. The team’s performance at home has also been dismal, with six losses in their first 12 league matches at Old Trafford—marking the worst home form since the 1893-94 season.
Under Amorim’s management, which began in November after Erik ten Hag’s departure, the club has suffered seven losses in just 15 games. This marks a stark contrast to the club’s illustrious history, particularly during the tenure of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who led the team to the top two finishes 20 times in 26 seasons. In the 11 seasons since Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, United has only managed to secure a top-two finish twice. With Amorim being the 10th manager since Ferguson’s exit, the club’s future remains uncertain as it grapples with its identity and performance, all while maintaining a valuation of approximately $6.55 billion, according to Forbes.
