Torborg played 10 seasons in the Major Leagues, spending his first seven years with the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1964 to 1970. He is one of only 18 players to have started as a catcher for three no-hitters. His first no-hitter was Sandy Koufax’s perfect game against the Cubs on September 9, 1965.

In 1970, Torborg guided Dodgers pitcher Bill Singer to a no-hitter against the Phillies. That year marked his final season with Los Angeles. Torborg then spent his last three MLB seasons with the California Angels. In 1973, he caught Nolan Ryan’s first of a record seven no-hitters.

Torborg, a career .214 hitter, transitioned into coaching and managing after his playing career. He began managing in 1977 with the Cleveland Indians, where he stayed until 1979, before joining the New York Yankees as a coach for the next decade.

Torborg’s most successful managerial stint came with the Chicago White Sox. In 1990, he was named American League Manager of the Year after leading the team to a 94-win season, 25 more than the previous year.

He spent one more year with the White Sox before becoming the New York Mets manager in 1992. However, his tenure with the Mets was short-lived. Torborg was dismissed in 1993 after compiling an 85-115 record.

Torborg also managed the Montreal Expos in 2001 and the Florida Marlins from 2002 to 2003. His coaching career ended in May 2003 when he was fired by the Marlins, who were 16-22 at the time. The Marlins went on to win the World Series under Jack McKeon later that year. Torborg’s career managerial record stands at 634-718, with a .469 winning percentage.

In addition to his managing career, Torborg worked as a baseball broadcaster. He called three World Series for CBS radio from 1995 to 1997 alongside Vin Scully. He also contributed to FOX broadcasts from 1996 to 2000 and 2004 to 2005. His final season in baseball was in 2006, when he served as a color commentator for Atlanta Braves games.
