5 Head Coaching Vacancies Remain After Johnson

As the NFL offseason unfolds, head coaching vacancies remain a hot topic following recent developments. With Ben Johnson departing from his role as the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator to take the helm of the Chicago Bears, and Mike Vrabel’s move to the New England Patriots, five teams are still seeking new leadership. The New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, Jacksonville Jaguars, Las Vegas Raiders, and Dallas Cowboys are actively pursuing candidates to fill their respective head coaching positions.

Ben Johnson’s swift decision to join the Bears came just two days after the Lions, the top seed in the playoffs, suffered a disappointing loss to Washington. Meanwhile, Aaron Glenn, the Lions’ defensive coordinator, is also in high demand, having interviewed with multiple teams and potentially on the verge of receiving an offer following a series of second interviews. Each team’s search is taking shape, with several candidates emerging as frontrunners.

The Dallas Cowboys are exploring their options after parting ways with Mike McCarthy. Owner Jerry Jones has had informal discussions with Deion Sanders regarding the position, but no formal interview has taken place yet. The Cowboys have conducted interviews with notable candidates, including Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and former Jets coach Robert Saleh. In Las Vegas, the Raiders are also on the hunt for a new head coach, having interviewed several candidates, including Glenn and Johnson, while new minority owner Tom Brady is expected to play a significant role in the selection process. Meanwhile, the Jaguars are set to meet with candidates such as Saleh and Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen, as they look to rebound from a disappointing season. The Saints have narrowed their search to a few candidates, including Glenn and interim coach Darren Rizzi, while the Jets continue their extensive search, having already interviewed 16 candidates, including Glenn and Commanders defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr.
