Vikings Coach O’Connell Agree to Extension

The Minnesota Vikings have announced a multiyear contract extension for head coach Kevin O’Connell, solidifying his role after a successful 14-3 regular season that exceeded preseason expectations. The terms of the deal, finalized on Tuesday, were not disclosed, but it comes with one year remaining on O’Connell’s current contract. In his three seasons at the helm, the 39-year-old coach has led the Vikings to a 34-17 regular-season record, although the team has yet to secure a playoff victory, holding a 0-2 postseason record.

O’Connell’s leadership was particularly highlighted by the breakout performance of quarterback Sam Darnold in 2024. After the Vikings parted ways with Kirk Cousins and drafted J.J. McCarthy, Darnold made history by becoming the first starting quarterback in NFL history to achieve 14 wins in his inaugural season with a new team since the NFL began tracking starts in 1950. The former third overall pick in the 2018 draft, who struggled with the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers, set career highs in nearly every statistical category and earned his first Pro Bowl selection. “It is an absolute honor to continue leading the Minnesota Vikings,” O’Connell stated, emphasizing his commitment to the franchise.

Vikings owner and president Mark Wilf praised O’Connell for his innovative play-calling and strong leadership, noting that he has cultivated a culture aimed at long-term success. O’Connell, who previously served as the offensive coordinator for the Super Bowl-winning Los Angeles Rams, has made a significant impact since taking over from Mike Zimmer, who was dismissed after an eight-season tenure. Despite facing challenges, including two losses to the Rams and a second consecutive sweep by the NFC North champion Detroit Lions, O’Connell’s ability to foster a positive environment has been evident, particularly with a 26-9 record in closely contested games. As the Vikings look to build on their recent success, owner Zygi Wilf expressed confidence in O’Connell’s vision and leadership moving forward.
