The New York Yankees are looking to strengthen their infield and may target one of the top defensive players available in free agency.
Ha-seong Kim of the San Diego Padres is still unsigned, but he could be an ideal addition for the Yankees. Fox Sports’ Deesha Thosar predicted that Kim, a Gold Glove winner, would sign with the team.
Thosar emphasized Kim’s high baseball IQ, defensive versatility, and skill, noting that these qualities would be a significant improvement for the Yankees. She pointed out that the team struggled with baserunning, defensive mistakes, and poor fundamentals in 2024. Kim, she argued, could be a steady, all-around player who would elevate the Yankees’ defense and quietly improve their offense.
With Gleyber Torres leaving for the Detroit Tigers, DJ LeMahieu is expected to take over as the primary second baseman. However, adding Kim would give the Yankees flexibility. They could move Kim to third base, with Jazz Chisholm Jr. at second, or keep Kim at second.
Kim has 64 starts at third base but was often behind Manny Machado at that position. He has started 118 games at second base in his career and earned a Gold Glove in 2022 as a utility player. Kim is not expected to be an expensive signing, and while he may not be ready for opening day, he could be a valuable asset once he returns.
