The Saranac Lake Elks Lodge #1508 has donated an automated external defibrillator (AED) to the Saranac Lake Youth Baseball and Softball Association (SLYBSA).
The AED will be located at Elks Field, off John Munn Road, where it will be available during the youth baseball and softball season in case of a medical emergency.
An AED is a simple-to-use device that can analyze the heart’s rhythm and deliver a shock if needed to help restore a normal heartbeat. It is essential in cases of sudden cardiac arrest.
New York’s law, effective last year, mandates that youth sports programs and children’s camps provide an AED, create an implementation plan, and train at least one staff member to use the device.
“The Elks are proud to support our community’s summer youth activities and help SLYBSA comply with state regulations to protect the health of our young athletes, coaches, and spectators,” said Terry Tubridy, Leading Knight of the lodge.
Chris Knight, President of SLYBSA, expressed gratitude for the donation: “We are incredibly thankful to the Elks Club for providing this critical safety equipment. While we hope we never have to use it, having an AED on hand could save lives.”
SLYBSA is also working to acquire a second AED for Rotary Field, next to the Saranac Lake Civic Center, before the start of the 2025 season. The AED purchase was a key priority in their recent Grand Slam fundraising campaign.
