Bob Uecker, the legendary broadcaster for the Milwaukee Brewers and renowned for his role in the 1989 film Major League, has died at the age of 90.
A statement from the Milwaukee Brewers described Uecker as “the light of the Brewers” and the “soundtrack of our summers.” The team expressed deep sorrow, calling his passing a profound loss to both the Brewers and the state of Wisconsin. “He was the heart and soul of Wisconsin and a dear friend,” the statement read. It continued, “Bob loved people; his presence warmed every room, and he made everyone feel like lifelong friends.”
The Brewers also reflected on Uecker’s far-reaching impact, saying, “Saying goodbye to Bob shakes us all. He was so much more than a Milwaukee Brewers icon. He was a national treasure.” His storytelling and sense of humor entertained millions, and now, his absence leaves a void, the team noted. “There are no words to describe the impact he had or how much he was loved,” they said, expressing gratitude for the joy he brought over the years.
Uecker had been the voice of the Brewers since 1971. His family also issued a statement, remembering his wit, charisma, and deep love for baseball and Wisconsin. “His legacy will forever be cherished,” they wrote, adding that it was his kindness, humility, and devotion to family and friends that they would hold most dearly.
Uecker, inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2011, was a five-time winner of the Wisconsin Sportscaster of the Year award. He was also affectionately known as “Mr. Baseball.”
In a statement, Uecker’s family revealed he had been battling cancer since 2023.
